Dog Collar Or Dog Harness? Which One Should I Get?
As a responsible dog owner, we should always have our doggos leashed when taking them for a walk but with 2 choices available, we get confused which one should we get. Most probably, you’ll be on the side of having a dog harness since it feels more comfortable for our doggo to use so that they will not choke in the midst of a surprise chase.
To help you decide, we listed out the pros and cons of having a dog collar and a dog harness.
Dog Collar
Pros
Aside from having the widest design choices, Dog collars are particularly great if you plan to leave it all the time since it’s a lot more comfortable for them to wear.
Dog collars are also great especially if your doggo is on the hairy side so that their lustrous hair will not get tangled from the collar unlike the harness as it may caught up the hair which may be painful for them to remove (or you might even need to cut their fur just to have them removed and we don’t want that!)
Cons
If your doggo is frisky and likes to run especially during walks, a dog collar might not be the best option for you since you’ll have greater risk for choking and neck injuries. Since some doggo likes to drag their walker down so they can smell the grass, chase a different doggo, or even if they just seem to be a hurry, your doggo will have higher chance of having neck injury.
Dog Harness
Pros
Dog owners praise dog harness as it is safer for your doggos to use. You do not have to worry if your doggo suddenly felt like running down again for it has a lesser chance of having a neck injury for the leash is attached to the whole body and not just the neck itself.
Aside from this, you’ll also have more control with your doggo which is a great tool if you’re trying to train your doggo to walk on a leash. As frisky as our doggos may be, harnesses are less likely to get tangled up in a leash by accident which means, no pausing the walking to detangle those annoying ties.
If your doggo already has a problem breathing, a harness is the best choice as it does not interfere with the neck avoiding any neck injury or breathing problems.
Cons
As much as we have all hails for the dog harness, a dog harness is not great for everyday use if you plan to have them wear it all day. It’s not entirely comfortable for your dog to wear for the rest of the day.
At the end of the day the decision is yours. Whether you pick out a dog collar or a dog harness, always remember to have them wear identification tags, yes, and all the time even when you’re at home. You’ll never know what might startle them during your walk and might manage to get off your hands. Having them wear identification tags never hurts and it’s better than to be sorry. After choosing between a dog collar and a dog harness, another decision awaits – Which color to get for our doggo!
